Gilroy Publishing Group was recognized as a force in the province’s print industry at the Manitoba Printing Industry Association’s Name in Print Awards at the Winnipeg Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites, Oct. 23.

The family run publishing group, now in its second generation, received the Industry Milestone Award during the evening ceremony.

Operating publications include the Dauphin Herald, Opasquia Times, Roblin Review, Russell Banner and the Swan Valley Star and Times. The group also provides commercial printing services to a broad base of government, corporate and small business customers, as well as the general public.

The milestone award recognizes the longevity of the five publications in an ever-changing industry. Some, such as the Herald and Star and Times, have been publishing for over 100 years.

“We are very honoured to be recognized for the effort we put in to providing our communities a great source of local news, information and from a business side, an effective advertising medium,” said Gilroy Publishing Group president Bob Gilroy Jr., adding that kind of co-operation and support is crucial if locally owned and operated publishing and printing operations are to survive.

The group of newspapers is recognized frequently as well at the Manitoba Community Newspapers Association awards banquet held every spring. In fact, the Star and Times was recognized as the Best All Around Community Newspaper in the province this past April.

“It is another part of the shop at home philosophy,” added Gilroy. “Without us supporting our local businesses and communities, and our local businesses and community supporting us, it would be another piece of the local economy lost to outside corporate interests. And, that would be good for no one,”

The Manitoba Print Industry Association Inc. is a non-profit, industry-based organization created to increase awareness of the Manitoba print industry, attract and retain individuals into the industry and expand training opportunities within the existing workforce.
